Noise is probably the most common occupational health problem, especially in the manufacturing industries. Individuals with noise-induced hearing loss may not become aware of the condition until it is of handicapping proportion; and by that time, it is permanent. In Singapore more than 50,000 workers are exposed to excessive noise at work in factories.
Singapore Standard CP 76 : 1999 Code of Practice for Selection, Use, Care and Maintenance of Hearing Protectors provides information and guidance to all persons who have to supply, purchase or wear hearing protectors, and encourage the use of effective criteria in their selection, use, care and maintenance of hearing protectors.
The Code requires hearing protectors to satisfy any of the following standards or equivalent: ANSI (USA), CEN (Europe), AS/NZ (Australia/New Zealand) and JIS (Japan). |
